What’s Ergothioneine？

Ergothioneine is a natural amino acid derived from plants and can be accumulated in animals. Ergothioneine is a natural antioxidant that can protect cells in the human body and is an important active substance in the body.

Ergothioneine is an amino acid that is found mainly in mushrooms, but also in king crab, meat from animals that have grazed on grasses containing ergothioneine, and other foods. Amino acids are chemicals that are the building blocks for proteins.

Among the organs with a high concentration of ergothioneine accumulation, the brain may be particularly sensitive to lower levels of ergothioneine. After all, the brain is a particularly metabolically active organ in the body. As we age, ultimately, the decline in brain function may be related to lower levels of ergothioneine. If ergothioneine is identified as a vitamin, declining brain function may be a sign of ergothioneine deficiency.

Ergothioneine levels in the body continue to decrease with age, which may be due to a decrease in dietary intake and an attenuation in the gene expression of the ergothioneine transporter protein. This situation suggests that a lack of ergothioneine in the body may have a significant impact on the impaired brain function associated with aging. This correlation is supported by research data, as two human studies have shown that older patients with mild cognitive impairment have lower levels of ergothioneine than those without cognitive impairment. There is evidence that ergothioneine accumulation in the brain may contribute to defences against oxidative damage, inflammatory responses and the decline in mitochondrial function associated with cognitive decline in the elderly.

Physical frailty is another condition closely associated with aging. In attempting to determine the metabolic basis of frailty, researchers found that frail elderly subjects had significantly lower levels of ergothioneine in their bodies compared to strong elderly subjects.

Another study showed a correlation between ergothioneine levels and maintenance of gait (walking style). A wobbly gait is a common sign of aging. The underlying cause of unsteady gait in the elderly is oxidative damage to skeletal muscle. Ergothioneine appears to help defend against this potential damage.

Research has demonstrated that ergothioneine may be helpful in mitigating the oxidative stress that potentially occurs in almost all of the tissues and cell types that have been the subject of study, such as the lining of blood vessels, the liver, the kidneys, the heart, and other organs. In addition, ergothioneine may help reduce the malignant effects of a wide range of harmful chemicals. Ergothioneine’s defence against oxidation and body cleansing effects are at the heart of all its positive effects. It is particularly well suited to provide protection for the heart and vascular system and to counteract the exacerbation of oxidative stress associated with glucose metabolic disease and obesity.
