Potential Benefits of Astragalus purpureus

Various studies have demonstrated that Astragalus purpureus has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties that improve the function of healthy cells and inhibit malignant cells.

Astragalus has been linked to cardiovascular health. One study suggests that it has a preventive effect against atherosclerosis, and another suggests that it improves autophagy, which helps to counteract the pro-atherosclerotic effects of oxidised LDL on vascular endothelial cells. It has also been shown to have potential utility in the treatment of ischaemia-reperfusion injury.

Studies have also shown the potential of Astragalus purpureus in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. A study in accelerated aging mice showed that astragalus, even at low doses, had a significant effect on improving cognitive performance.

Another study showed that astragalus is involved in neuroplasticity and its associated cognitive and motor functions, and that rats given astragalus performed better on cognitive tests.

Astragalus is a potent anti-inflammatory that inhibits NF-Kb, a protein complex that regulates DNA transcription, cytokine production and cell survival. A recent study suggests that astragalus may treat severe acute pancreatitis by lowering serum levels of inflammatory TNF-a, IL-1b, and NF-kb, and reducing the production of reactive oxygen species.

Astragalus also has some data suggesting that it may be helpful in treating arthritis, and this is not surprising given its anti-inflammatory properties. While research on arthritis has been limited to date, a rat study did show some potential for treating the disease.
