PRODUCT INTRODUCTION
Neohesperidin dihydrochalcone is a hydrogenated flavonoid derivative extracted from oranges and other citrus fruits. It is characterized by its sweetness, which is 300 times greater than that of sucrose, and its crisp, lasting aftertaste. It does not have the unpleasant aftertaste associated with saccharin or stevia.
NHDC not only improves the taste but also has a long-lasting sweetness. Combined with other sweeteners, it can be used to enhance taste, mask bitterness, and improve food and beverage quality. It also has excellent applications in the food, pharmaceutical, and feed industries.

Benefits And Potential Applications of Neohesperidin Dihydrochalcone (NHDC)
Antioxidant Properties
In recent years, many studies have shown that neohesperidin dihydrochalcone has a significant concentration-dependent scavenging activity on stable free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS).
In particular, NHDC has the most substantial inhibitory effect on H2O2 and HOCl, with scavenging rates of 93.5% and 73.5%, respectively.
What’s more, NHDC can inhibit protein degradation, cleavage of the plasmid DNA strand, protect the HIT-T15, and HUVEC cell death from HOCl attack.
The antioxidant activity of NHDC against various free radicals was examined. The results showed that NHDC could partially inhibit the browning effect of pigmentation caused by polyphenol oxidase.
In addition, NHDC can also significantly inhibit the up-regulation of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP-1) induced by infrared radiation. These results suggest that NHDC has the potential to protect human skin from premature aging caused by exposure to infrared radiation.
Application 1
NHDC can act as an anti-browning additive and whitening agent.
Lower blood sugar and Lower Cholesterol
NHDC is an effective, non-toxic, low-calorie sweetener that satisfies people’s cravings for sweetness, reducing sugar intake overall.
Recent studies have discovered that NHDC can prevent α-amylase in mammals to a certain extent and consequently lower the body’s sugar intake, which then lowers blood sugar levels in the body. This is very important in the medical field, especially for diabetic patients.
Application 2
NHDC can fulfil the role of a sugar-free, calorie-free sweetener. When used correctly, it has the potential to replace sucrose and lower human sucrose intake. It is appropriate for both obese and non-obese individuals.
Protect the liver
Studies have found that NHDC can reduce the levels of ALT, AST and hydroxyproline in liver tissue in CCI-induced liver fibrosis mice, and slow down cell degeneration, necrosis and liver fibrosis to varying degrees.
In addition, reduction of ALT and AST in serum can improve lipid metabolism and liver function, and inhibit fatty liver and endothelial plaque formation in major arteries. NHDC can also effectively alleviate CC1-induced oxidative damage and reduce inflammatory response and apoptosis.
Application 3
The NHDC is hopeful that it will be useful as a hepatoprotective agent.
Prevent gastric ulcer
NHDC can hinder gastric acid secretion, so when mixed with other gastric acid inducers such as aluminum hydroxide gel, it can be used as an antacid to enhance the gastric acid resistance of the latter.
Suhrez et al found that NHDC significantly reduced the cold-restraint stress (CRS)-induced ulcer index. Its activity is comparable to that of ranitidine, which inhibits histamine activity, thereby significantly reducing gastric acid and pepsin secretion.
Regulating immunity
NHDC was added to feed not only for its pleasant taste and ability to increase appetite in animals, but also for the probiotic effects found by Daly et al.
Following the addition of NHDC to the piglet feed, the number of Lactobacilli at the entrance to the cecum of the piglets increased significantly with the increase in the lactic acid concentration in the intestinal lumen. Thereby affecting the intestinal symbiotic flora, regulating the body’s immunity, and reducing intestinal diseases.
Application 4
Neohesperidin DC can be used as a feed additive. NHDC improves the palatability of feed, increases animal appetite, and improves intestinal bacteria, then stimulates their growth.
Neohesperidin dihydrochalcone (NHDC) recommended dose and Side effects.
- The desired dosage for desserts and dairy items is 10-35 ppm for sweeteners and 1-5 ppm for flavor enhancers.
- The dosage for Pharmaceutical Bitterness Masking is 10-30 ppm (sweetener) and 1-5 ppm (flavor enhancer).
- The maximum recommended dose is as follows: 30-35 mg NHDC/kg complete feed, 5 mg NHDC/L water, and 3-8 mg NHDC/L water for sucking and weaning pigs.
The amount used depends on the purpose, but any ingredient can become a danger to the human body if consumed in large quantities.
Studies have found that neohesperidin dihydrochalcone (NHDC) can lead to nausea and migraines when the concentration is 20 ppm or more. It is advised to wear surgical masks when working with pure NHDC.

Neohesperidin Dihydrochalcone Application
Neohesperidin Dihydrochalcone sees widespread usage in water-based, milk-based, and juice-based beverages, ice creams, wines, desserts, cakes, bakery products, candies, chewing gums, sauces, etc. It is an especially good fit for functional foods, health care products, and dietary supplements.
Sweetness Enhancer
NHDC has a crisp, persistent taste and is very sweet, and when used at the same time enhances the effects of other artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, saccharin, acesulfame potassium and cyclamate, and sugar alcohols such as xylitol.
This means less use of other sweeteners, which in turn reduces costs. NHDC is widely used in juice drinks, milk drinks, wine and bakery products.
Sweetener for Dietary supplements
NHDC is a low-calorie sweetener that also has some physiological benefits. It has antioxidant activity and can lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels. It is especially suitable for functional foods, health products and dietary supplements as a sweetener substitute.
Food Flavor/Flavor Enhancer
The flavor of NHDC is similar to maltol and ethyl maltol, and it produces a significant synergistic effect with other flavor ingredients. It is widely used in frozen milk products, candies, puddings, fruit juices, non-alcoholic beverages, condiments jams, chewing gums, and so on.
