antioxidation
Quercetin is a powerful antioxidant that cleans up free radicals in the body. Free radicals are atoms or molecules with unpaired electrons produced during the body’s metabolism, which attack various biological molecules in cells, such as DNA, proteins and lipids, leading to cell damage and aging.
Quercetin can neutralize free radicals by providing hydrogen atoms via its own hydroxyl group, thus preventing free radical chain reactions. For example, in the prevention of cardiovascular disease, it can reduce the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, because oxidized LDL cholesterol is more likely to deposit in the walls of blood vessels and form atherosclerotic plaques.
Anti-inflammatory effect
Quercetin can inhibit various signaling pathways in the inflammatory response. When inflammation occurs, the body will produce a series of inflammatory mediators, such as interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), etc. Quercetin can inhibit the production and release of these inflammatory mediators.
For some chronic inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, quercetin can reduce inflammation in the joint site and relieve pain and swelling. It can also act on inflammatory cells, such as macrophages, regulating their function and reducing the aggregation of inflammatory cells to the site of inflammation.
Cardiovascular protective effect
In addition to the cardiovascular benefits of its antioxidant effects, quercetin can also lower blood pressure. It can promote vasodilation by regulating the function of vascular endothelial cells. Specifically, quercetin activates nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in vascular endothelial cells, resulting in increased production of nitric oxide (NO), which relaxes vascular smooth muscle, thereby lowering blood pressure.
Quercetin also inhibited platelet aggregation. Excessive platelet aggregation is one of the important factors leading to thrombosis. Quercetin can reduce the activity of platelets, reduce the risk of thrombosis, and play an important role in the prevention of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular embolic diseases.
Anticancer potential
Quercetin has shown some potential in cancer prevention and treatment. In the initial stage of cancer development, it can inhibit the activation of carcinogens and the proliferation of cancer cells through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. For example, in some in vitro cell experiments, quercetin can inhibit the growth of cancer cells and induce apoptosis of cancer cells.
It can also interfere with cancer cell signaling pathways. Cancer cell growth and metastasis depend on a complex series of signaling pathways, and quercetin can block key links in these pathways, such as inhibiting protein kinase activity, thereby preventing further development of cancer cells. However, at present, the use of quercetin for cancer treatment is mostly still in the research stage, and has not yet become a mainstream anticancer drug.
