What Is Sodium R-Lipoate?

Sodium R-lipoate is a stable, bio-available form of R alpha lipoic acid, an endogenous antioxidant (naturally present in our bodies) that is said to be ‘universal’.

It is capable of acting in both water- and fat-soluble environments. In the body, it acts as a cofactor for numerous mitochondrial enzymes involved in energy metabolism, particularly in the brain.

It is also involved in inactivating the free radicals responsible for oxidative stress in all tissues. This is partly due to its ability to partially recycle certain other antioxidants: vitamin E, vitamin C and glutathione. It has a synergistic effect with L-carnitine.

Alpha lipoic acid exists in two forms known as enantiomers: the R form and the S form. R alpha lipoic acid is the only form naturally present in the body. It is capable of creating an amide bond with lysine, making it biologically active as a mitochondrial cofactor in the human body. What’s more, it is 50% more bioavailable than the S form.
