What’s Spermidine?
Spermidine is a polyamine, which means it has two or more primary amino groups. It is naturally occurring and widely present in ribosomes and living tissues. Spermidine has been shown to extend the lifespan of fungi, nematodes, insects and rodents.
In the human body, it is synthesized from its precursor putrescine and used to produce spermine, another important polyamine. It plays a vital role in cell function and survival.
Spermidine is considered a potent activator of so-called autophagy. This is a cyclic process within cells that causes old cells to renew themselves, thereby restoring their activity. Recent research supports this idea and suggests that increasing intake of this polyamine through a spermidine-rich diet can reduce all-cause mortality related to cardiovascular disease.
